Shhhh....
Do You Hear Chewing?
by: Carol B. Ruiz

In nature, Subterranean Termites perform the very beneficial task of breaking down cellulose (wood) into usable nutrients that are quite valuable to our ecosystem. Since termites do not distinguish between tree roots and the wood structures our homes and businesses are made from, problems arise.  Yeah, BIG PROBLEMS, as some of us have discovered.

Native Subterranean Termites are social insects.  They live in colonies in the soil in three castes (groups of insects specialized to perform certain functions in the colony). Below is an extremely simplified breakdown.
  • Reproductives/Swarmers – Well you know, even termites need some lovin’
  • Workers – build, maintain and feed the colony
  • Soldiers – fierce warrior protectors

What do they look like?
Native Subterranean termite swarmers are black with long white wings. The soldiers heads are rectangular-squarish shape. These termites swarm during the day usually in March when the weather begins to warm up. (termites may be triggered to swarm inside when we turn on our central heaters).

Where Are They?
Detecting the presence of termites may be difficult because their activity is usually hidden by many elements like: wallboards, vinyl siding, wall paper or wooden trim.  Evidence of an infestation might include mud tubes, damaged wood, swarmers or simply the presence of their wings.  Large numbers of swarmers inside your home is usually a good indication of an active infestation.  If swarmers are noticed outside, be on alert, they are in your area.  Weather you have found termites or not, feel free to contact a professional termite inspector to have your property checked out.

What can I do?
Here are my top tips when it comes to termites, #4. Walk your entire home and make sure the soil level is at least 3 to 5 inches below the top of your slab or foundation wall. #3. Clear away any stored wood piles or vegetation that blocks your view of the slab. #2. Repair all leaky pipes, gutters or faucets immediately.  And #1:  When WOOD touches GROUND – Termites may be FOUND.  So diligently check these areas throughout the year.

Alright I found live activity, now what?
Always get three estimates on any work to be performed, make sure that one of the estimates is from a National Company, as they are usually more structured in their pricing methodology.  Visit us at www.BlueStarBugs.com and look for great information on: “Before you hire a Pest Control Operator”.
